First, refer to Location & Call Number Assignment to determine whether or not to assign an NLM call number. If you determine that an NLM call number should be assigned, follow these guidelines:

I. DLC/NLM, DNLM/DLC or NLM/NLM records
NLM assigned call nos. are to be accepted without change. There is no need to verify the call no. or check ANTPAC.

Examples:
  • 060 10 WT 155 |b A47885 2000
  • 060 10 WM 145.5.R7 |b C761 1997

Sometimes copies of a single title are acquired both for GML and SL, where an NLM call number is appropriate for the GML copy and an LC call number is appropriate for the SL copy. In these cases, choose the LC or NLM call no. as the primary call no. in the bib record and place the other call no. in the 949 field (or item record) with its appropriate location. For example:

049 CUI1 |a CUI4
050 00 QH452.8 |b .H93 1993
949 |i 3197002145335 |l slbar |s l
949 QH 452.8 |b H992 1993 |i 31970021575714 |l gml

Variation: Sometimes there will be an incomplete NLM call no. in 060. In this case complete the call no. as instructed in the Cutter-Sanborn tables (See below).

Example:
The title: Op de man af, 1993; with title main entry.
060 10 WM 460.5.S3

Completed call no. should be:
060 10 WM 460.5.S3 |b O61 1993

II. Copy with member assigned NLM classification and subject headings
Check NLM for accuracy. Be sure the assigned NLM call no. is in agreement with the NLM subject headings. Check ANTPAC for conflicts. If necessary, revise the Cutter to fit in our shelflist.

Example:

  • 096 WM 420 P971 1973 -- or -- 060 14 WM 420 P971 1973

A check of the shelflist indicates that we have an item with this call no. with a later date. It is a different work and not a later edition.

Completed call no. should be:
  • 060 14 WM 420 P9715 1973 [The main entry for the item fits after the main entry for the item already in the shelflist].

III. Creation of NLM call nos.

For UCI created NLM call numbers use field 060 _4 (1st indicator = blank, 2nd indicator = 4). Do not use a |b tag, put the whole number into |a

  • Ex. 060 _4 WM 420 P9715 1973

Check NLM subject headings and assign appropriate classification. Then Cutter following the instructions given in the Cutter-Sanborn Table as briefly outlined:

  1. Find the first few letters of the author's surname on the Table. Use only the bold face letter shown in the combination and the number next to it (i.e. A757 for Arnold, Margaret; K49 for Kimball, John; L676 for Lewis, Sinclair).

Occasionally there will be no number that fits a name exactly. In that case use the preceding number. For example: Andrews, Helen would be under A566 (Andrews, E.) which is the preceding number; not under A567 (Andrews, J.) the following number.

Now check ANTPAC for potential conflict. If none found, complete call no. by adding the date. If conflict found or if adjustment is necessary to fit within the existing shelflist, proceed to Step b.

  2. Cutter as you would when cuttering for a LC call no. When two authors share the same number, add a digit. A good number to select is 5, as there is room on both sides for additional interpolation as necessary.

For example: A book already in the collection by Richard Colby would be C686. A new book to be added to the same classification by another author named Colby would need a different author number. A book by Simon Colby could then be C6865. This leaves room for the insertion of additional authors between Richard and Simon-using C6862, C6863 and C6864. (It is best to avoid using 1 and 9, if possible, since the use of either would mean going to a fifth figure when another author has to be inserted). To accommodate a book by John Colby, it would be necessary to go to the previous number-which is C685. In this case add a digit such as C6855, since an author beginning Colbu would cause a conflict.

  3. A work mark is used for different titles by the same author. This is a letter taken from the first indexed work in the title. Works that are cataloged as title main entyr do not have a work mark.

    For example:

Hybridization techniques, by John Rafferty would be assigned:
    060 14 QH 421 R137h 1978

Methods in hybridization , by John Rafferty would be assigned:
    060 14 QH 421 R137m 1994

If there is more than one work with the same classification and cutter, whose titles begin with the same letter, add a second letter to the workmark to distinguish them

    For example:

Pesticides and human health, by William Hallenbeck would be assigned:
    060 14 WA 240 H184p 1985

Pyrethrum, the natural insecticide, by William Hallenbeck would be assigned:
    060 14 WA 240 H184py 1994
